Psychiatry & Mental Health Department formed on year 1992 with only one specialist without specific ward for psychiatry and now it has improved until the existence of a ward with 12 beds in Men Ward and 12 beds in Women Ward. In year 2007 the total of beds has been added and now each ward has 15 beds for both Men and Women ward. The services provided generally for acute cases from the City of Ipoh, district of Kinta and referral cases from other departments in Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun Ipoh.

1.0 Services provided:
1.1.1 Outpatient Unit
(a) Giving the continuous treatment to patients that newly discharge from hospital and also to new cases so that the patients can carry on living as normal people and can accepted by surrounding communities. This unit also provides services to senior citizens and children. A ‘Child Psychiatrist’ specialist from Hospital Taiping will be coming to the clinic every month to treat the problematic children.
(b) Give mental health education (psychoeducation) to patient's family and about the importance of the medicine, side effects of the medicine, the importance of coming to receive the follow up treatment and recognize the early relapse symptoms.
(c) Supervising and giving training to the Trainee Medical Officer, post graduate student and Post Basic Paramedic.
(d) Doing research about the treatments to the patients.
1.1.2 Methadone Unit
(a) Giving treatment and rehabilitation to the drug addicts that referred by MEdical Officer from other hospitals, wards and National Anti-Drug Department.
(b) Doing screening to the cases before starting the Methadone program.
(c) Giving Methadone syrup in DOT and detect the side effect of Methadone syrup.
(d) Giving counseling service by group, individual and to the drug addicts' family member.
1.1.3 Home Care Unit
(a) Giving treatment to patients at home.
(b) Monitor the condition of patients in the medicine and it's side effect.
(c) Giving ‘psychoeducation’ to patient and patient's family if patient still didn't understand about their diseases.
1.1.4 Inpatient Unit – Ward 24 for Men and Women.
(a) Giving treatment and presentable rehabilitation to the patients that checked in into the ward.
(b) Continuously giving ‘psychoeducation’ to patients after their mental condition is stable.
EDUCATION SERVICES AND MENTAL HEALTH PROMOTION
- Consultant Psychiatrist, Medical Officer and all staff of the department are involved in in-service education program at Hospital Raja Permaisuri Bainun Ipoh.
- Giving a talk in non-government agencies conferences and giving talk about Mental Health in Nursing College and Perak Medical College by Consultant Psychiatrist.
- Provide guidance to trainee doctors, Post Graduate and paramedics.
- Participate in research by Consultant Psychiatrist, Medical Officers and paramedics.
